February Service Project - Saturday, Feb. 4th

This month our team (sophs & varsity) will be delivering food boxes to home bound individuals in the Salt Lake area on Saturday, February 4th.

We need parents to help transport the team to the Utah Food Bank and then to their assigned homes. Each group will be given 3 boxes to deliver and we were told to plan on about 20 minutes to drive & deliver each box.

We will meet at the high school at 8:00 am on Saturday morning and leave for the Food Bank at 8:30. A light team breakfast will be held prior to heading out.

If you can help transport our amazing girls and would like to help us with our service project, please email or talk with any of the coaches by Thursday, Feb 1st.

Hearts of Gold Service Project

Thanks to all those who donated fleece for the blankets and stuffed animals for the Children's Justice Center, which was the organization the school worked with during Hearts of Gold in December. The girls tied 13 fleece blankets on the bus and after their practices.

Team Christmas Party and Practice

We will then meet at Chilis on 13400 So at 12:15 for our team Christmas party. Players, please remember to bring your secret Santa gift. Lunch will be paid for through the club account.

Fundraisier, Spirit Pack, & Uniform Rental Fee

Please turn in all of your fundraising money or donations to the main office on Monday and have them put a copy of the receipt in Coach Ames' box. Information for banners and ads for the program should have been emailed to Mike Bradshaw.

Players who did not fundraise or collect any donations, need to pay their $150 spirit pack fee and $75 uniform rental fee in the main office by Wednesday, December 14. Please contact Coach Ames if you have any concerns regarding the payment of these fees.

Game Day Concession Help

We are looking for a parent(s) who would be willing to head up the game day concession assignments. We had a number of parents volunteer to help out at our initial parent meeting and now we need to decide on which games they can help with. This is a great way to raise money for the program that can be used to offset the cost of Spring Fling and our summer tournament costs. We have 7 more home games and would like to rotate parents on each of the teams so you can still watch your daughter's game.

Varsity Game Film Online

We are excited to be using a new online video program this year. The website is hudl.com and will allow players to watch game film online anytime they'd like. This program will also allow players to make their own highlight videos.

Players who want to have access to the site need to give Coach Ames their email address and she will then send out an invitation. Coach Ames is checking to see how we can give parents access to the game film as well.

Currently the Springville game is available and the Timpview game should be available on Monday.

7th/8th Grade Super League Team

Any current 7th or 8th graders who are looking to play on a super league team with girls from the Herriman area, now's your chance. Mike & Julianna Maynard are coaching a girls team at the XSI Factory and are looking for a couple more players. This is a great opportunity to play on a competitive team throughout the winter months.

Eligibility Packet & Participation Fee Deadline

Thanks to all those who turned in their $75 participation fee and eligibility packets last week. Please make sure if you have not turned in your packet or paid this fee, to do so by Tuesday, November 29. Any player who does not do so will not be able to participate in our game against Timpview on Tuesday.

We'd like to encourage all players to sell at least one ad for the program or banner for the gym to help cover the costs of the spirit packs and uniform rental fee. The deadline for this fundraiser is December 10th.

Players will receive 50% of the ad or banner price towards their fees and players will get 100% of any donations they receive. Please keep track of your donations so these donors can be recognized in our program.

All of the items for our spirit pack have been ordered and should be here this week. We are asking that players pay their $75 uniform rental fee and $150 spirit pack fee by December 12th. If this will be a problem for any player, please contact Coach Ames.

Italian Dinner & Mustang Madness

Come kick off the 2011-12 Lady Mustangs Basketball season on Friday, November 11 by joining the team for an Italian Dinner with special guest, Coach Jerry Sloan. Dinner will start at 6:00 pm in the school cafeteria and is $5 per person or $20 for a family. Please let them know you are there to support the Lady Mustangs and our program will receive 50% of the proceeds.

Following dinner, Mustang Madness will start at 7:00 pm in the main gym and is free of charge. This will be your first glimpse of this year's team as they participate in an 8 minute inter squad scrimmage. Other activities will include: Varsity boys team scrimmage, shooting contests, raffle give aways, free cotton candy & popcorn. We hope this night will become an annual tradition at the high school as we get ready for our upcoming season.

Tryouts will start on November 7th and go through November 9th. Please arrive early to turn in your paperwork and get signed in. Players should wear gym clothes and are encouraged to bring a water bottle.

In order to tryout, players need to turn in their signed UHSAA Tryout Checklist and a copy of their 1st quarter grades. Students need to have a 2.0 GPA and can not have more than one F or NG for 1st quarter.

5 Weeks to Tryouts

We are counting down the days until the start of our second season! We can't wait to meet everyone who is interested in being part of the Lady Mustangs Basketball program.

A few things to keep in mind as tryouts approach. First, you are student-athletes and need to be academically eligible in order to tryout for the team. The UHSAA rules state: "Students cannot fail more than one subject in the preceding grading period. They must also have obtained a minimum grade point average (GPA) of 2.0 in the preceding grading period. Incompletes (I), no grades (NG) and no credits (NC) are considered failures until made up." We are looking for players who are great on and off the court.

Second, take advantage of the Fall Clinic and Open Gyms that are being offered. If you are unsure if you want to tryout, come and play with the other girls one night and see how you do.

Third, don't cut yourself. If you love playing basketball and want to be part of the team, please give yourself a chance by trying out. Let us, as coaches, decide if you have the skills necessary to be part of the team whether you are a senior or a freshman.

Fall Basketball Clinic

Our Fall Basketball Clinic starts this week on Tuesday night! This clinic is free of charge and is open to all 9th-12th grade girls who are interested in improving their basketball skills. We will be focusing on defense and individual offensive skills, but will not be playing too many full court games. Scrimmages will take place during open gyms.

Baseline Concussion Testing

The high school will be offering athletes the opportunity to participate in ImPACT testing. ImPACT testing is used to create a baseline for each athlete and would then be used when clearing an athlete to return to play after suffering a concussion. Please take advantage of this opportunity to be proactive about your physical well being.

ImPACT Testing will be held at the high school on Thursday, Aug. 4th:

Spring Fling

Spring Fling will start the week of April 11th. All current players who want to participate, please contact Coach Ames by Wednesday, March 30th.
Incoming 9th & 10th graders who would like to play need to contact Coach Ames and will be selected to play on the 2nd team if spots are available.
We are guaranteed at least 7 games and games are played Monday through Saturday.
The cost will be $40 per player. We hope to have 2 teams entered.

We will practice 2 times a week at the high school. Dates and times will be announced later this week.

Banquet Questions

There have been a few questions about the banquet. It is for all players and their parents from the Sophomore, JV and Varsity teams.

If you have not paid for the banquet, it's not too late. We were trying to get a rough estimate of how many people to plan for based on those who have paid. Please don't think you can not come to the banquet if have not paid yet. There will be plenty of great food for everyone.

It's easier for us if you'll pay in the main office so we don't have to worry about collecting money the night of the banquet.

Herriman City Hall is located at 13011 South Pioneer Street.

Basketball Banquet

Our basketball team banquet will be held on Wednesday, March 23, 2011. Invitations were given to all players, but in case you did not receive an invitation here are the details.

The banquet will be held at Herriman City Hall and will start at 6:00 pm. The cost for the banquet is $10 per person and needs to be paid in the Main Office by March 21st. Players do not need to pay for the banquet because it was included in their spirit pack. The dress is business casual.

Players, please remember to turn in your team gear on Wednesday, February 23rd. You will be turning in your home and away uniforms, your reversible fill in uniform, cardinal shooter shirt,blue shooter shirt, and your team bag.

We will also be holding player exit interviews during athletics and after school for the freshman.

Tentative Spring and Summer Dates

We have been getting a few questions about what camps and tournaments the Lady Mustangs will be participating in this Spring and Summer. Here is a tentative list of what events we will be involved with over the next few months.
End of April: Spring Fling Tournament, usually about 8-9 games held at local high schools
June 6-10: Team Summer Camp at the High School
June 10-11: UVU Jamboree, 5 games
June 17-18: Weber St. Jamboree, 5 games
June 22-25: University of Utah team camp and Jamboree, team will stay on campus

We are also looking at scheduling Open Gym time twice a week during the month of July.

Spirit Pack Money

Thank you to those who have paid for their spirit packs. The players have received all of their gear and we need to pay our bills. If you have a question about how much you owe, please email or talk with Coach Ames at practice.

For those who received donations that exceeded the price of the spirit pack, these funds will stay in the girls basketball club account. We are planning on playing in a spring league, attending a team camp, and also putting together one Varsity & one JV traveling team.

More information will be forth coming about the dates and price of these tournaments.

Practice Times

It's hard to believe that we are entering the last month of the season. The players continue to work hard and are improving in all areas of the game. This week we travel to Bingham on Tuesday and Kearns on Thursday. We appreciate the wonderful support of family and friends at all of our games!

Starting this week, Jan 17th, Varsity will practice from 1:00-3:30 pm on A days & 2:30-4:30 pm on B days.
Sophomores will practice from 3:30-5:30 pm on A days & 4:30 - 6:30 pm on B days.

It looks like we will be playing Union on Friday and Salem Hills on Saturday. I have not heard back from Salem Hills about the times for the Sophomore and JV Games yet. We are assuming the Sophomores will play at 3:30 and JV will play after the Varsity game around 7:00 pm. Varsity will play Union at 5:15 pm on Friday and Salem Hills at 5:00 pm on Saturday.

Fundraiser & Donations

U of U Nutritionist Wednesday, December 8th

We are very excited to have a Nutritionist from the University of Utah come talk with our players on Wednesday at 3:00 pm. She will be teaching the girls about proper hydration, game day snacks, pregame meals, and how changing their eating habits can help them out on the court.

Players need to meet in Coach Ames' room, #2514, at 3:00 pm and should bring their journals.

The bus will be leaving at 5:45 pm for our Varsity Endowment game against Brighton at 7:00 pm later that night. All players are expected to attend this game.

Win, Win, Win

All 3 Lady Mustang teams won their first home games of the season. The players are working hard in practice and it's great to see their hard work pay off during the games. We appreciate all of those who came out to Mustang Arena to cheer on the Lady Mustangs and helped to create a terrific home court environment for the girls to play in.

Our next game is Saturday, December 4th against Grand County. JV plays at 1:00 pm, followed by the Varsity game at 2:30 pm. There will not be a sophomore game.

We are working on designs for short sleeve t shirts, long sleeve t shirts and sweatshirts that can be purchased at our games or can be personalized with your daughter's number on them. Nov. 8th: 9th & 10th Graders - 4:30-6:15 pm in the Main Gym

5 Weeks to Tryouts

Are you ready? We are counting down the days until the start of our second season! We can't wait to meet everyone who is interested in being part of the Lady Mustangs Basketball program.

A few things to keep in mind as tryouts approach. First, you are student-athletes and need to be academically eligible in order to tryout for the team. The UHSAA rules state: "Students cannot fail more than one subject in the preceding grading period. They must also have obtained a minimum grade point average (GPA) of 2.0 in the preceding grading period. Incompletes (I), no grades (NG) and no credits (NC) are considered failures until made up." We are looking for players who are great on and off the court.

Second, take advantage of the Fall Clinic and Open Gyms that are being offered. If you are unsure if you want to tryout, come and play with the other girls one night and see how you do.

Third, don't cut yourself. If you love playing basketball and want to be part of the team, please give yourself a chance by trying out. Let us, as coaches, decide if you have the skills necessary to be part of the team whether you are a senior or a freshman.

Fall Fundamentals Clinic & Open Gyms

Mark your calendars! We will be offering a Fall Fundamentals Clinic for all 9-12th graders who are interested in playing basketball at Herriman High School. The dates are September 30th, October 5, 6, 12 & 13 and will go from 6-8 pm. Please check back next week for registration information.

We will also be holding 6-7 open gyms during the 3 weeks prior to tryouts on November 8th. Open gyms are free of charge and no coaching can take place. It is a great opportunity for players to scrimmage against each other and work on their individual skills. Tentative dates are Oct 19, 20, 26, 27 & Nov 2, 3 & 4th. The gym will be available from 6-8 pm each night.

"The end depends upon the beginning." What a great beginning we've had this summer! As coaches we want to thank everyone who came to our 1st summer camp and made the sacrifice to attend open gyms. We concluded open gym with a scrimmage and it was great to see the improvement we have made as a team. We are very excited for our 1st season and the opportunity to lay the foundation for all future Lady Mustangs!

As players, I want you to answer the following questions as we head into our 8 week dead period. What team do you want to make? Do you want to be a starter on that team? Are you going to be a good or GREAT player? Finally, what are you going to do to make it happen? Either you did or you didn't. Please take a minute to write down your answers to these questions and post them as a daily reminder of your goal to become a member of the Lady Mustangs basketball team. H.E.R.D. IT!

Summer Open Gym: 8-10 am Tues & Thurs

We will be holding open gym every Tuesday and Thursday starting on June 29th at Oquirrh Hills Middle School. Open gym will start at 8:00 am and go until 10:00 am. This is a great opportunity to come work with your coaches and fellow lady mustangs on the little BIG things that will make the difference in your game. The first 90 minutes will be devoted to skill development and the last half hour will be controlled scrimmages. Open gyms are optional and there is no charge.

There will be no open gyms the week of July 5th.

TEAM CAMP - "Mustangs in the Making"

The first annual Herriman Girls Basketball Camp will be held June 7 - 11 from 8 to 10:30 am at the Factory in Lehi. All future Mustangs going into 8th through the 12th grades are encouraged to attend. The camp will focus on individual offensive skills, team defensive principles, and players will compete in a variety of half court and full court games. Players will receive a t-shirt and a Mustang summer workout program, which will include shooting charts, guard & post drills, and general conditioning drills.

Registration for the camp will take place on Monday morning. The cost of the camp is $65 and will be conducted by the Lady Mustang Basketball Coaches.

The Factory is located at 4425 N. Thanksgiving Way.

We have scheduled three open gyms at the Factory in Lehi on Tuesday, May 25, Thursday, May 27 & Tuesday, June 1 from 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm. All future Lady Mustangs are encouraged to attend and should be ready to learn what Herriman basketball is all about. Open gyms will be used to work on individual skill development, general team concepts, and specific basketball conditioning drills. Please bring a basketball, water bottle, and a commitment to do your very best.
